Oakland Hebrew Day School Seeks New Head of School Starting Summer 2009
Oakland Hebrew Day School (www.ohds.org) – a vibrant, innovative co-educational Modern Orthodox school with strong Judaic and General Studies programs – is seeking an inspired, committed educational leader to serve as the new Head of School starting in early summer 2009.
The Head of School will play a key leadership role in continuing to build OHDS as an institution with strong educational pedagogy, a rigorous and creative general and Judaic studies curriculum, a skilled, dynamic faculty, and a diverse student and parent population. Chief areas of responsibility include: education and curricula strategy, planning and oversight; faculty recruitment, development, and supervision; student recruitment and retention; fundraising; community relations; administrative and fiscal oversight. The Head of School also serves as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors.
The ideal candidate will have:
1) a track record as a Jewish educational leader or teacher with comfort with both Judaic and General studies curriculum;
2) a sophisticated knowledge of educational issues, child development and a “whole child” philosophy;
3) a deep understanding of and commitment to all aspects of the mission and philosophy of the school;
4) strong skills and abilities as a leader, faculty mentor, school administrator and fundraiser; and
5) a solid understanding of best practices in Jewish day school education.
The candidate must be able to work successfully and respect the school’s diversity as it relates to its student, parent and faculty populations (i.e., diversity of Jewish practices and affiliation, race, socio-economic status, family composition, etc.), and recognize this diversity as a strength of the school. The candidate must also embrace and exemplify the school’s philosophy by living a modern Orthodox lifestyle. Critical to success will be strong planning and decision-making abilities, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a passion for working with children in Grades K-8.
The Head of School reports to the Board of Directors and is based in Oakland, CA.

Continuing education professional development programs from YU
YESHIVA UNIVERSITY/INSTITUTE FOR UNIVERSITY-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP CONTINUING EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
A new division of Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Supervision, the Institute for University-School Partnership has launched a series of continuing education professional development programs for day school administrators, educators and professionals. Most of these programs are available either via video conference or by live stream.

Teacher-trainings available in Bibliodrama and N. Leibowitz's pedagogy
Yael Unterman, an experienced educator from Jerusalem, has run
in-services in UK, USA, Canada and Australia, to very positive
response by teachers. She trains teachers in Bibliodrama, a marvelous,
useful technique which throws students of all ages into a different,
deep relationship with the Bible /Talmud story, by getting them to
identify imaginatively and emotionally with the characters.
Yael also teaches about the life of Nehama Leibowitz, master Bible
teacher, and aspects of her pedagogy useful to teachers, based on an
extensive biography of Professor Leibowitz's life to be published next
month.
Yael will be visiting North America late February through late March
2009. Book talks and educational-theatre performances for parents or
the wider community are also available.
