Lookstein Fellow Graduation Ceremony Held at Residence of Chief Rabbi Sir Dr. Jonathan Sacks

The May 2005 graduation ceremony of the second class of Lookstein Fellows took place at the Hamilton Terrace residence of Chief Rabbi Sir Dr. Jonathan Sacks. Eight Lookstein Fellows were presented with certificates by Rabbi Sacks, in the presence of Conrad Morris, Director of the British Friends of Bar-Ilan; David Cohen, Chairman of the Lookstein Committee of the British Friends of Bar-Ilan; David Rose, Chairman of Governors of the Agency for Jewish Education; and other dignitaries.

The Lookstein Fellowship Awards are given upon the completion of three years of study under the auspices of the Joseph H. Lookstein Center for Jewish Education of the School of Education, Bar-Ilan University. Professional training is afforded to heads of Jewish studies in primary and high schools, in order to make them more knowledgeable and effective teachers and leaders of their departments. The first cycle of ten Fellows graduated in 2000. Upon the culmination of courses in topics such as curriculum development, pedagogy of Jewish studies, special education and teaching of prayer, all Fellows must prepare a practical project (case study).

"Jews are a people whose heroes are teachers. What more beautiful link between Israel and the Diaspora, therefore, than one predicated on education. That is what the Lookstein programme has given our teachers—and the stimulation and creativity it has led to is evident in the pages that follows," prefaced Rabbi Sacks in the Case Study Abstracts published for the event.
