The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Middle School Social Studies Teacher for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The ideal candidate is a warm, creative, charismatic educator with expertise in and passion for social studies content and experience teaching the skills of research, organization, writing, close reading and collaboration. The ideal candidate has a successful record of creating strong relationships with students, is deeply knowledgeable about the subject area, is creative and collaborative and has demonstrated success at and enjoys working as an active member of a team. The ideal candidate uses a project based learning and student-centered approach to develop critical thinking and meaningful historical understanding.


Teaching 7th grade Geography and the Developing World and/or 8th grade Government;
Teaching daily morning check-in, academic flexblock, and/or a weekly advisory or other experiential education courses;
Participating in team meetings to discuss student progress;
Working collaboratively within the Upper School history department and middle school grade level teams.


A minimum of a BA in History, secondary education and/or a related field. An MA degree is preferred.
Candidates should have at least three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments.
Experience in differentiated instruction, project based learning, Collaborative Problem Solving, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred.
Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.

Work Environment:

Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
