A grade-level dean at the Leffell School is an essential member of the student support team. Each grade has a designated certified counselor (or similar training), who works with students, parents, and faculty to help create an optimal learning environment for each individual child. As the primary liaison between school and home, the Dean’s responsibilities include student and family support and relations, faculty support, assistance in creating and implementing high school experiential educational programming, as well as other responsibilities. Deans collaborate daily with the Director of Student Services, Psychologist, Learning Specialists, High School Principal, and other administrators and teachers to monitor both individual student progress and a view of the grade as a whole. The dean leads weekly student support team meetings with all adults who interact with a given child in order to gain a holistic view of that child. Deans also infuse a counseling orientation into all experiential education programming, such as daily prayer experiences, annual retreats (shabbatonim), and class trips. Deans run weekly topic-related counseling groups, grade-level advisory groups, and collaborate with our college counseling department in running junior and senior seminar groups whose focus shifts to the college process.
