The Head of Student Life (HSL) is a central position within the internal life of the campus community, bringing together all constituents to create a thoughtful, proactive, and responsive approach to student well-being. This role takes a holistic approach to student development, integrating guidance and behavior support to address students’ evolving needs as they develop from Lower School through early adolescence.
A key responsibility of the HSL is overseeing student behavior management and leading the guidance team in implementing developmentally appropriate, student-centered support systems, ensuring a cohesive approach to student well-being, counseling, and behavioral support. Establishing clear behavior expectations, implementing proactive measures to address student needs before challenges arise, and developing systems to explicitly address student behavior are essential components. Strong partnerships with existing offices on campus foster a collaborative approach to student support and problem-solving. The HSL works closely with staff, faculty, and parents to implement best practices in counseling, support, and behavioral interventions.
The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who listens without judgment, fosters collaboration, and builds strong relationships. Highly organized and adept at managing multiple initiatives, they skillfully prioritize tasks and assess program effectiveness. With confidence and experience in proactively managing and addressing student behaviors, they demonstrate high emotional intelligence and maturity, navigating complex dynamics with patience, persistence, and adaptability. Committed to continuous learning, they seek out and integrate best practices to enhance student support. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to challenges in the moment, and above all, they are a passionate advocate for children and their developmental needs.
This role requires at least 5 years of experience in a school-based leadership role. A Master’s degree in social work, school psychology, or education with a concentration in social-emotional learning is strongly desired. Experience in student guidance, counseling, or social-emotional learning is a significant advantage.
