Senior Class D'var Torah Project

  • by: Rabbi Avi Silverman

The following is an outline of the Beth Tfiloh (Baltimore, Maryland) Senior Class D’var Torah Project, 1998-1999.
Each student in the senior class is required to present a D’var Torah to the high school during the course of the year. If the student does not present, then he/she has not fulfilled all of the requirements for graduation.
Assignment: The D’var Torah should minimally be five minutes in length, and should not exceed seven minutes. When giving the D’var Torah there should be both a Hebrew and English reading of the text you are speaking about, and some use of commentary. The critical point is that you leave the student body with a positive Jewish message on how to conduct their Jewish lives. You also want to leave them with a meaningful Jewish insight that you’ve gained during your years here at Beth Tfiloh.

  • A copy of the presentation schedule should be posted in the classroom/Judaic bulletin board so that each student knows when he/she is presenting.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to know when he/she is speaking.
  • The teacher should be available to help any student in need of assistance in preparation for the D’var Torah.
  • The teacher must approve an outline of the D’var Torah by the Wednesday before it is given.
  • Sample copies of student’s Divrei Torah from previous years should be available for reference.
  • The teacher should schedule two make-up days for students who are unable to come to school the day of their scheduled presentation.
