Principals are expected to be visionaries, leaders and agents for change. But what skills are needed to navigate competing visions of the school, its lay leadership, and the wider community? Launched in 1999, The Lookstein Center’s Principals’ Program enhanced the professional knowledge and skills of nearly 250 day school leaders who form a cross-denominational network of skilled, dedicated professional Jewish day school leaders. The year and a half long program which included seminars in Israel and America, individualized action research projects, and mentoring, is currently in a study phase, in order to gain a greater understanding of the short and long term impact of the program. This process is an important component of the action research thinking and reflectivity that we have been teaching and promoting.
This year was a significant milestone in our growth as leaders. We learned that successful change occurs first by identifying a need and then systematically planning ways to generate the support of administration, colleagues and staff members in the initiative. This collaborative effort is the power that drove this project forward at a rate that far exceeded our goals.

The Lookstein program was a transformative learning experience in that I feel that I have new and improved skills as a school leader. The fact that an experienced school leader can feel transformed after 19 years of administrative experience as a principal, demonstrates how effective the learning experience was. Kudos to all of your wonderful staff for sending me back to Magen David “new and improved”!
– Richard Altabe, Magen David Yeshiva High School, Brooklyn
My leadership skills and my self-confidence in my leadership skills have grown as a result of this learning experience. I am grateful to the Lookstein Center and the Avi Chai Foundation for providing me with excellent training in administrative skills and leadership.
