A friend of mine works at a non-Jewish, local Montessori charter school. The school participates in a global program called Level Up Village in which classes partner with different countries. One of the classes is partnered with Palestine. In efforts to learn more about Palestine the school would like to suggest a novel called A Little Piece of Ground by Elizabeth Laird as summer reading. A summary of the book is included below. She is looking to suggest something that could provide a balanced perspective for the students to read in place or in addition to this book which presents a very one sided perspective with inaccurate details. I would love to hear if anyone has any suggestions. The book would likely be read by middle schoolers.

SYNOPSIS
Twelve year-old Karim Aboudi and his family are trapped in their Ramallah home by a strict curfew. Israeli tanks control the city in response to a Palestinian suicide bombing. Karim longs to play football with his mates - being stuck inside with his teenage brother and fearful parents is driving him crazy. When the curfew ends, he and his friend discover an unused patch of ground that's the perfect site for a football pitch. Nearby, an old car hidden intact under bulldozed buildings makes a brilliant den. But in this city there's constant danger, even for schoolboys. And when Israeli soldiers find Karim outside during the next curfew it seems impossible that he will survive . . .
