Keeping students intellectually competitive

February 11, 1999 05:00AM
<HTML>Dear Shalom,

Rabbi Aryeh Klapper earlier posted the idea that we need to work to make
sure that Modern Orthodox students are intellectually competitive. I
assume that he means intellectually competitive with Chareidi students. A
number of the advanced students at the Torah Academy have voiced this as a
serious concern of theirs. A means to partially remedy this situation is
to facilitate advanced students to master Shas mishnayot with Kehati. I
believe that this gap is a major reason why many Modern Orthodox students
opt to eventually lead Chareidi or semi Chareidi lives. Much of Israel's
religious Zionist community has succeeded in closing this gap and I
believe we can do so in North America with motivated students. Failure to
do so will lead to further disintegration of the North American Modern
Orthodoxy.
