A brief word from your editor about teaching Gemara

February 28, 1999 05:00AM
<HTML>As you can see from the list of topics above, this is a busy digest. The
clear indication is that some of you are making use of your colleagues
expertise through this list. Yiyasher Kohakhem. One of the things that I
have found interesting is that the issue that has generated the most
discussion is Talmud and teaching Gemara. I have saved the responses that
came in over the weekend to the Gemara question for the next digest (this
one was long enough already) since there were a large number and fit
together logically. While you are waiting, I'd like to present you with
the question that my students often ask me. Why has Gemara become the
centerpiece (oftentimes to the exclusion of all else) of higher education
in the religious world?
I look forward to posting answers in time for Purim, a typically Torah
sheBa'al Peh holiday. Shalom</HTML>
