I'll go one step further than Rabbi Berkowitz in his critique of YU's education program. Why is it that one can obtain a BA in Jewish Studies, and an MA or MS in Jewish education without ever demonstrating mastery of spoken Hebrew? I have raised this issue with President Joel who referred me to the heads of Azrieli, all of whom could only offer the weak excuse that the schools don't demand or require it.
As they say in Yiddish: "That's where the dog lies buried." YU should set the standard.
