My recommendation for an alternative (or companion) read to Elizabeth Laird's A Little Piece of Ground would be Puah Shteiner's Forever My Jerusalem, which is a memoir written by a Jewish child who was driven from her home in the Old City in 1948.

I have no doubt that there are many poignant stories on both sides of the complicated reality that exists in Israel, but I certainly hope that the teacher will note that A Little Piece of Ground is fiction. According to Wikipedia "The story comes from Laird's experiences in Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War," which means that it cannot possibly depict an actual event that took place under Israeli occupation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Little_Piece_of_Ground).
