<HTML>In response to Jeff Kuperman's query re. interrupting tefillah with
announcements, I do recall that Rabbi Yosef Blau (Mashgiach Ruchani of
YU/RIETS) was somewhat lenient in this regard in specific circumstances.
I am virtually certain that he allowed announcements of page numbers and
even explanations even during Birkot Keriat Shema - "between chapters"
(see Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 66:5). This was specifically for work
with KIRUV (the organization) which was dealing with people who really
were unable to follow the service otherwise.
