Letter to Elementary Day School Principals

March 23, 1999 05:00AM
<HTML>To All Elementary Day School Principals,

I am a day school principal and a doctoral student at the Azrieli Graduate
Institute of Yeshiva University, and I am currently conducting research
with the goal of enhancing Jewish education and strengthening the day
school movement.

Prior research suggests that low rates of teacher turnover are beneficial
for student performance, teacher effectiveness, stability of the school,
the teacher's family, and the potential for kiruv. Additionally,
searching for replacement teachers is a drain on our time as well as a
financial drain on the school.

I am interested in identifying some of the factors that are associated
with voluntary turnover of rebbes in particular, with the goal of
disseminating my findings so that principals could use this information to
increase the likelihood of retaining those teachers that he/she wants to
retain.

Many of you have already assisted me by forwarding copies of
questionnaires to rebbes in your schools in the fall, and I thank you for
that. I am writing now to ask for your assistance, whether or not you
received a mailing from me in the past.

Please e-mail me your responses to the following five questions:

1. Please write the name of your school and the city or community in which
it is located.
2. How many rebbes (male Orthodox Jewish teachers of limudei kodesh) do
you currently employ?
3. Please list the ages of each of the rebbes.
4. Please list the # of years each rebbe has been at your school.
5. How many students are currently enrolled in your school?

Thank you very much for your assistance. If you would like a copy of my
findings, please include the request in your e-mail.

Sincerely,
Avram Skurowitz</HTML>
