HEBREW PROFICIENCY STANDARDS

March 24, 1999 05:00AM
<HTML>I was excited to read about the initiative of the World Council for Torah
Education to explore the issue of standards for Hebrew proficiency.
Although our school is Ivrit B'Ivrit, there are times when one feels that
this approach is becoming increasingly more difficult to maintain. The
administration and the lay leadership of the school are always evaluating
the level of Hebrew proficiency of our students and whether the teachers
are speaking enough Hebrew in the class, from kindergarten through grade
8.

But, till that initiative produces tangible results, I would like to know
whether other schools have already developed their own instruments to
evaluate Hebrew proficiency. I think that this information would be very
valuable.

Thanks for the help!
