Nathan T. Lopes Cardozo has a book called Between Silence and Speech in which he has an essay entitled "On Silence Sacrifices and the Golden Calf". In the essay, he discusses the opinion of the Rambam who writes in Moreh Nevuchim that sacrifices were only meant for those generations who were used to sacrificing to idols. Of course, that doesn't seem to go so well with what he writes in the Yad Hachazakeh that we aspire for the return of the sacrifices.
