In response to Prof. Hendel’s comments about students “enjoying†learning, it is important to remind ourselves of the following words from the introduction to the “Eglei Tal†(in my translation):

Some people say that when one enjoys his learning and analysis of Torah, this isn’t really learning Torah for its own sake, as much as when one learns simply without enjoyment, just for the mitzvah. But one who enjoys learning is mixing in his own pleasure. All this is clearly wrong. In fact the opposite is true. The main mitzvah of learning Torah is where he rejoices and enjoys his learning, and then the words of Torah are absorbed in his blood. Since he enjoys Torah, he becomes connected to the Torah.
