When I first started teaching, one of my colleagues was frequently late and the principal calculated based on minutes late how much of this teacher's salary to dock and did so. I was never late even though I was teaching at two other schools. One morning I overslept and the principal told me "You probably needed the extra sleep."
I guess it depends on how chronic the lateness is.
