<HTML>Let me ask: How does one define democracy?

It is impossible to identify Torah with any secular ideology. Hence there
will always be some element of incompatibility between Torah and whatever
secular theory is dominant at the moment. The real question is thus what
is the nature and locus of incompatibility. The next question is what
makes the idea of democracy attractive. Only at that point can one proceed
to ask whether the believer in democracy must close him/herself to Torah
and how much the believer in Torah can accommodate major elements in
democratic theory.

But, again, democracy comes in a variety of shapes and flavors. Anyone
interested in pursuing the inquiry must be ready to unpack the slogan of
democracy and define the specific ideas to which one is attracted or
committed.</HTML>
