The problem Stuart is certainly acute in Jewish education, within the
larger context of education in general. The primary problem is, of
course, that teachers are poorly paid, are overworked, and have little
prestige in their communities.
Several of my students have thought of going into education, but were
DISCOURAGED by other educators because of the reasons cited above.
The only solution I can see is school vouchers... although this will
probably solve only the first two problems.

[ Aside from these responses, Rabbi Zweiter's post led a number of people
to write to him directly. I find it interesting that both educators who
chose to respond to the list lay the blame at the doorstep of financial
considerations. It appears to me that the problem goes well beyond these
issues, and encompasses not only the field of Jewish education, but the
Rabbinate and lay leadership, as well. Shalom]</HTML>
