OK, we have seemingly just about had our fill of discussing the crisis of
leadership that is facing Jewish education. My question now is what are we
going to do. Specifically, I am wondering if anyone has ideas of how to
recruit people into the teaching profession.
Think about it, students at universities go to job fairs, where they get
to see various professions putting their best foot forward and encouraging
them to sign up. As far as I know, chinuch does not participate in such
fairs. I am not just talking about getting students currently in Jewish
institutions to go into education. What about the campus communities in
Penn, Columbia, Princeton, Harvard, Rutgers, Queens, Touro, etc.? When
everyone around you is getting his or her college degree and then either
going for a Ph.D. or entering some other profession, chinuch does
not stand much of a chance as an option.
There was much talk on this list of making chinuch attractive to those who
might potentially enter it. Now I am asking if anyone has any ideas on how
to do exactly that.
