down but in the end may prove the "derekh arukha shehi ketsara" since the
quality of reading is quite good. Has anyone had experience using this
method? Any comments on its efficacy?

I had the opportunity to teach 2nd grade Chumash using the Taamay
Hamikrah. I also taught taamim for a number of years as a separate course
in elementary schools. Presently, I am teaching the Taamim to 4th grade. I
found that the students retained a tremendous amount of the text. Through
Taamei Hamikrah students gain a better appreciation for syntax,
pronunciation and are able--in the not-to-distant future--to read the
Torah correctly in the Beit Kinesset. There are many other advantages,
including many different types of parshanut, that enhance the study of
Tanach. I think that this is an area of great potential, that has been
explored in university, ulpanot, and some Yeshivot, but less so on the
elementary and hs levels.
