I understand that the "Rebbe" – Teacher – and student are from a "Modern Orthodox" school.
As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts is that to be a modern individual, the very essence of modernism since Emanuel Kant is to question previous philosophies, views, positions, medical treatment, etc. Modernism encourages the re-examination of every aspect of learning, from the Tanach to the Talmud, with the goal of finding the truth and relying on our own wisdom, intelligence and reasoning.
This is the message the student is fed every day, all day at home and at school. The student is surrounded more hours a day with the "modern" environment than with an "Orthodox" environment.
The Rabbi has to understand that the student is not being rude or trying to irritate the teacher, today's lifestyle is to question all "Halachot" that do not agree and befit with Western culture.
