I have received a number of emails that either commend me or condemn me for acknowledging that Orthodox practice discriminates against women. So, I am compelled to clarify. I am not suggesting that is the case. I am acknowledging that it is a widely held view. Those who ascribe to the view will regard a policy that allows or encourages young women to wear tefillin as a positive innovation. However, I am suggesting that this policy may also have the unintended effect. It may be interpreted as conformation of perception that a restrictive policy that does not make room for young women to wear tefillin is, in fact, an expression of discriminatory attitudes.
