Many articles have argued (persuasively in my view) that these figures are false. Readers are free to scan the available reporting and reflect on which side is more compelling. Does that mean there is nothing to worry about? Absolutely not!
Besides the obvious truth that even one assault is one too many, there is a vast hook-up culture (of a mostly consensual nature) on college campuses. This obviously poses a challenge to the spiritual and moral fabric of religious Jewish college students. Teaching students how to navigate the environment is not easy, but that does not mean no one should try.
I am outraged by assault, but there is some risk in proclaiming something that may be false. It can lead people to overlook genuine threats, and credibility is lost when warnings do not materialize. One bizarre and extreme example illustrates this ordinary truth: the film 'Reefer Madness' did not stop people from smoking marijuana.
