Maternity / paternity / adoption leave

Unlike many American Jewish schools, the Canadian schools are almost all
unionised. For CHAT, under Agreements for the JS and General Studies
teachers (who, historically, have separate Unions but virtually identical
agreements), there is regular Maternity leave for a minimum of seventeen
weeks, with up to one year on request (including payment of full insurance
and other benefits for up to six months). Paternity leave (without pay) is
granted around the time of the birth for a maximum of two weeks, with more
if special circumstances apply. Parents adopting a child are entitled to
30 days leave of absence at the time of adoption. In all cases seniority
etc is protected during absence.

For those wondering why I am still around having proclaimed that I am off
for the summer -- the answer is that summer is over as far as I am
concerned! Our school is one large building site, with some $CAN7.5m of
building and renovation under way. They have one month left to finish the
work. September will see about 1,130 students at CHAT (Grades 9-12),
including a record Grade 9 of over 370. Before everyone starts emailing
the list that this is too large for a High School -we are looking to
establish a second branch. Have a good day!
