<HTML>The recent discussion of ethics that appeared on the list makes me wonder
how some of the stories that we are reading as Parshat Shavua these days
are taught in the classroom. Certainly the simple reading of Parshat
Toldot is that Ya'akov Avinu takes advantage of his brother Eisav and
tricks him out of the birthright that was his. Rashi's comment that
"Anochi Eisav Bechorecha" should be broken into two separate clauses, each
of which contains a partial truth is, even more disturbing than what
Ya'akov does. Should I be teaching my students that lying is evil, but
telling half truths that technically aren't lies is all right?
I'd be pleased to know how these issues are dealt with in classrooms other
than my own.</HTML>
