Dear Rabbi,
Although much research is done online, libraries, and especially librarians, are still essential for student learning. Many studies have shown a direct relationship between the use of a school library with a professional librarian and student achievement. A librarian can teach students not only how to access information but also how to evaluate and interpret what they find. In addition, not all information can be most effectively found on the internet. Databases and print materials are vital sources of information that a librarian could help students and teachers access.
Libraries with good librarians can also increase understanding and appreciation for literature. As I am sure you are aware, a love of reading and research is essential for school achievement and for success and satisfaction later in life. Moreover, a well-trained Judaic librarian can provide a bridge between Judaic and general studies, assuring that students see the relevance of sacred texts and Jewish values to secular life.
I am available for consultation if you need more information on how to plan your library and provide a library curriculum for your school.
B'shalom,
