<HTML>I love this list.
A simple question was posted with regard to suggestions that have worked
in schools with regard to Yom Ha'atzmaut celebrations. The only answers to
be posted so far seem to reflect on the esoteric nature of the celebration
itself. While I am not criticising the philosophical import of these
responsa, I would like to offer, humbly, some practical ideas that we have
used for school that have conquered the academic debate.
My first suggestion is one of policy. It is essential that the students
themselves feel that they are a part of the decision making process around
the celebrations. That said, to celebrate Israel's 50th, last year, we
created a graffiti 50th flag wall onto which we painted a huge Israeli
flag with the number 50 in its middle. We then asked every student to sign
the wall, in marker pens or koki's to show his or her support for the
state. This worked very well.
Hoping to keep the wood from the trees.
