<HTML>Concerning Yom Haatzmaoot: I do not want to get into an ideological
argument about the "true meaning of the day" and especially not with those
who suggest that we make the "adherence" to all the trimming of it as some
sort of a litmus test for teachers in the modern orthodox educational
system. Why not start at a much lower level: How to get our students to
care about Israel and what happens there? The lack of knowledge, or the
care to know, about Israel is shocking sometimes, at least in my school
(Yeshiva of Flatbush, High school) A student publication devoted to news
from Israel and to other Israeli issues was started last year, but it
appears on a non -- regular basis and it is hard to get students to
contribute. Is this the experience of others? How can we correct the
situation? Please don't suggest that we have more assemblies on Israel,
we have all we can take!
