<HTML>Concerning sex education, I would suggest that students read books such as
"The Magic Touch" and "Outside Inside" by Gila Manolson, as well as
"Doesn't Anyone Blush Anymore?" by Manis Friedman. They are all a quick
read, appropriate for older middle schoolers and high schoolers, and they
can generate a meaningful discussion of the issues. Schools shouldn't be
afraid to call in outside people to discuss the Jewish view of sex,
dating, and modesty (for both sexes -- not just how long sleeves need to
be). There are plenty of people both in the States and Israel -- and I'm
sure also in other parts of the Diaspora -- who are interesting and
dynamic lecturers, and who can relate to kids honestly without being
patronizing.
I also suggest that school staff involved in these issues be unequivocal,
and unafraid to state the Jewish view -- and equally unafraid explain why
the Jewish view works so well.
