<HTML>I wanted to thank the list for bringing the topics of substance
abuse, and sex education to this educational forum. While many important
things have been said, I think some major aspects in both topics are being
left out. While I do understand the importance of mekorot, I do not
believe they will be very significant for many kids, especially those
who need the education and guidance the most.
If asked, most Yeshiva High School kids will agree that substance abuse
and negiah are assur. This would be even before seeing mekorot or reading
the books on these topics. What I believe that the adolescents in the
American High school Yeshivot need is to learn HOW to deal with there
urges and addictions. Although preventative education is important, what
do we do for the kids who are already on drugs and sexually involved. It
is the answers to these questions that MUST be addressed. Kids have to be
taught that they could trust their teachers enough to come discuss the
issues with them. This might prove to be a little harder than teaching a
mekor.
These issues should be taught by experts and professionals to the
educators in our schools. I would be glad to suggest names of people who I
believe have the ability to teach these matters to teachers, if anybody is
interested. Just send an email. Once again, Yashar Koach.
