These lesson plans were created by The Lookstein Center in the months following the of the events of October 7, 2023, in an effort to help students connect to their feelings through Jewish texts, songs, and rituals.
Lesson Plans for Elementary School
Lessons of Courage from October 7, 2023 – This lesson plan for upper elementary and middle school students explores the quality of courage through Jewish texts as well as the real-life examples of courage highlighted by some of the heroes of October 7, 2023.
Shema as Foundation, Prayer as Expression – This lesson analyzes the meaning of Hope, and how it connects to the fundamental Jewish prayer of Shema.
Ritual Moments as Expressions of Hope – This lesson analyzes how the value of Hope can be demonstrated throughout various Jewish rituals.
Biblical Role Models of Hope – This lesson explores various Tanakh figures, how they displayed the value of Hope, and how we can learn and be inspired by their example.
Tehillim Perek 121 – This lesson plan explores a chapter of Tehillim through creative expression.
Lesson Plans for Middle School and High School
Zakhor, Remembering the Fallen Heroes of October 7th – In this lesson plan, students explore the importance of memory in the Jewish tradition, learn about individuals who were killed on October 7, and consider how they can incorporate the lessons learned from these heroes into their own lives.
Pidyon Shvuyim – This lesson plan for high school students analyzes the mitzvah of pidyon shvuyim, redeeming captives.
Lessons in Hope – In these lesson plans, students analyze chapters of Tanakh, draw parallels to themes of Hope, and use creative expression to make personal connection.
Tehillim Perakim 121 & 130 – In this lesson plan, students compare and contrast two chapters of Tehillim, and then use creative expression to analyze them further.
“Moledet” by Hanan Ben Ari – This lesson plan analyzes the song “Moledet,” which addresses the complex emotions experienced following the events of October 7th.
“Yamim Shel Sheket“ – This Hebrew-language lesson plan and worksheet explore the song “Yamim Shel Sheket” and how its themes relate to modern times.
“Al Kol Eleh“ – This Hebrew-language lesson plan and worksheet analyzes the song “Al Kol Eleh,” as well as its vocabulary and themes, and draws connections to the feelings of today.
