Project Eitan
The Lookstein Center’s Project Eitan is a middle school program designed to connect students with Hebrew language, Israeli culture, and Israeli society, through Israeli songs while they work towards a culminating Hebrew language goal.
This year we chose to focus on the theme of resilience and hope as it draws from the values and identity of the people of Israel throughout the generations. The songs were chosen carefully according to their linguistic level as well as the messages they carry. Through analysis of the lyrics and a creative project, students will have the opportunity to explore the theme of Israeli resilience as it is expressed in the songs and through their own personal expression. Examples of songs include: “Le’haamin” (“To Believe,” by Idan Reichel), “Holem k’mo Yosef” (“Dream Like Yosef,” by Hanan ben Ari), and more…
The program includes a unit on Hebrew language and a unit on Israeli songs complete with the following components:
1. Hebrew Language Unit
~ Hebrew language goals
~ Sample test questions
~ Hebrew language test (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar, and syntax)
2. Israeli Songs Unit
~ Teacher’s guide for the teaching of 5 Israeli songs focusing on: language, textual and intertextual analysis, the song’s message, and its relevance (approximately 20 hours)
~ Creative student project
~ Sample test questions
~ Israeli song test (open-ended questions)
Participating teachers can participate in 2 training webinars.
Students who complete the tests and the project will receive a certificate from The Lookstein Center of Bar-Ilan University.
