Light in the Darkness
Nearly 30 years ago as a graduate student, I met with psychologist Dr. Norman Blumenthal. He was a clinician working in private practice and a hospital, but he was also the founder of many additional community projects- an educational program for children with learning challenges, a big brother program, and more. He explained to me that, as therapists, we have a unique window into the struggles that are causing great suffering in the community.
Over the past twenty five years of my practice, I have witnessed the exponential increase in the percentage of my male teen and young adult clients who are struggling painfully with internet pornography, as well as the accompanying masturbation.
In response, I began to research the topic, and slowly this booklet integrating Torah and psychological perspectives came together. The booklet provides healthy and Torah-based perspectives to address the guilt and hopelessness these young men carry. It is also shares practical guidance to facilitate gaining more control over both unwanted behaviors and overwhelming emotions.
My hope is that it will help students as well as their teachers, rabbis, and mental health professionals to navigate these challenges healthily. Together we can help our young men find the light in the darkness.
