War, Peace and Judaism 3

  • 50 minutes
  • Grades: 9-12
  • Lesson Plan

Third in a four-lesson unit. Students look at war and peace from the perspective of Biblical history and Jewish ethics by studying traditional Jewish texts. Students will be challenged to consider how Judaism synthesizes war and peace.

Lesson objectives

The student will be able to:

1. Express their team’s argument accurately.

2. Outline the opposing team’s basic argument.

Skills

The student will be able to:

Respect the opposing team during the debate.

Procedure

1. Additional preparation time for the debate.

2. Chair the debate. Ask each team to make a three-minute presentation making specific references to their sources. Then give each group (preferably students that haven’t spoken yet) two minutes to decide which questions they will ask the other side. After the questions are asked, the groups should answer and defend their positions. After the debate is finished, ask the students what they really feel about these issues and facilitate any discussion that follows.

3. Assessment: If you would like to assess the debate, a good rubric is available here: http://mh034.k12.sd.us/classroom_debate_rubric.htm
