Birkat Hamazon 2

In havrutah, students read the text of Birkat Hamazon and determine the main themes of the prayer.

Introduction

These lessons serve as an introduction to the text of Birkat Hamazon. Students will work with the text itself, improving reading and comprehension of text, preparing for the rest of the curriculum. The Hebrew proficiency level of the class must be taken into account when planning this lesson.

2. Identify the theme of each section of Birkat Hamazon, reflected by the student’s ability to give an appropriate title to each section.

Resources & Equipment needed

Copies of Birkat Hamazon for the students (with English translation if necessary), photocopies of the worksheets (see appendix).

Procedure

  1. Introduction – Review the concepts that were discussed in the last lesson. Explain that the class is going to examine the text of Birkat Hamazon to see how it thematically compares to the texts that the students composed in the last lesson.
  2. Split the class into pairs (havrutot). Explain to the class the importance of learning b’havrutah. Hand out texts and worksheets. Instruct the class to read through each paragraph of the text, in Hebrew (and English if necessary) and work on their assignment.
  3. Tell the students that some class time during the next lesson will be given to complete the assignment, which will be followed by a discussion.
