active learning – any type of learning activity in which the students are actively involved

constructivism – a theory of learning which posits that the most meaningful learning is when the students construct meaning based on information they have learned

cooperative learning – a mode of learning in which two or more students work together and build on each other’s strengths

differentiated Instruction – an approach to teaching that tries to tailor the learning for multiple levels of students in the classroom and multiple learning styles
digital natives – people who grew up using digital technology as part of their experience
dyad – a group of two

hevruta – (Hebrew) a learning partner; it also describes a style of learning in which two tsudents trying to work on understanding a text as a team

higher order thinking – thinking that moves beyond the questions of what and when into issues of why and how, often involving analysis, derivation and application of principles, and synthesis of information and ideas into a coherent whole

kinesthetic – a type of learning focused on action or movement

learning stations – a type of active learning activity in which stations are set up in different parts of the room wit learning activities designed for each. Students can remain at one station or move from station to station

learning styles – a theory of learning which understands that different people learn in different ways (some people learn better by listening, or by seeing, or by doing, etc.)

meta-cognition – the awareness and understanding of processes being experienced
